2015-2016
Over to Europe!

In 2015, “Translate in… ” hopped across the pond as Translate in Chantilly in historic Chantilly, just north of Paris. This European premiere was hosted by SFT, France’s professional union of translators, with help from Chris Durban and Dominique Jonkers. It proved such a success that in the closing session a representative of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) volunteered to organize the next session in Britain.
 

One year later, Translate in Cambridge took place at King’s College—an ITI production masterminded by Anne de Freyman.

With its format, vision and core team of instructors unchanged over the years, “Translate in...” is not an institution, but an informal yet dedicated community of like-minded professionals. Organizers pass the torch from year to year.

In 2017, Grant Hamilton stepped up once again, creating Translate in Quebec City and welcoming over 130 participants back to Canada.
 

It was great, of course, and spirits were high as it drew to a close, as all good things do.

Little did anyone know how long it would be before we'd meet again in person.

Our 2020 event was scheduled to take place in stunning Charlevoix in the province of Quebec, Canada. Then Covid hit, and Translate in Charlevoix was postponed for a year.
 

In January 2021, the situation remained uncertain, leading François Lavallée, founder and president of Magistrad (Quebec), to suggest a virtual seminar for summer 2021: Translate Online.

Nearly 300 enthusiastic participants signed up, from near and far—North America and Europe, naturally, but also Australia and Lebanon.

In summer 2022, with the pandemic in the rear window, Grant Hamilton agreed to organize and host the now long-awaited Translate in Charlevoix on the northern banks of the Saint Lawrence River. It was a heartfelt reunion, with new, enthusiastic participants joining in despite the remote location.
